The great pink diamond bungle
The simple, eye-catching display in Kununurra’s Kimberley Fine Diamonds display room is there to represent the nearby Argyle Diamond Mine’s total annual production of the highly sought after pink diamonds.
Remarkably that single champagne glass represents 95 per cent of the world’s production. They are so incredibly rare that they make up only one tenth of one per cent of the mine’s annual output. Colored diamonds are so unusual that for every 10,000 white diamonds mined worldwide, only one will be naturally colored.
The average price of these superlative samples is A$250,000 (NZ$314,000) with the largest priced at a cool A$750,000. By any gemstone standard, these babies are out of the ordinary.
